Overview: Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor) is in the Papilionidae family. They are strong fliers, with tail-like apendages on the rear of the wings. General Habitat: Open deciduous woods and nearby fields.
Caterpillar & Host Plants
Larvae feed only on Dutchman’s Pipevine & Virginia Snakeroot. They accumulate toxins (alkaloids) called aristolochic acids which makes mature caterpillars and adults unpalatable to predators.
