Planting Bulbs
Add color and beauty to your garden
For many years we have had great fun with different fall bulbs and mixes. When bulb catalogs arrive in the mail, they can be very overwhelming. Don’t be put off though – Shorb Landscaping can help you and we can discuss what types of bulbs, colors, and planting styles would work best in your garden. Some of the bulbs that can make your garden stand out include:
Alliums
Alliums can make a bold statement in late May through June. One advantage of alliums is that, being in the garlic family, deer rarely eat them. Some varieties of alliums stand over 3-ft tall, and their first year bloom is quite stunning. Alliums “Globemaster” can also be naturalized with Yarrow (Achillea “Moonshine”) as seen below.
Blue Bells
Spanish Blue Bells naturalize in the shade, but have their strongest bloom when planted in sunny locations
Daffodils
Daffodils return every year with strong blooms. Plant them once, and treat them like a perennial flower. They are great to plant throughout existing perennial beds and throughout large swaths of groundcover for that early spring pop of color.
Tulips & Pansies
Tulips should be re-planted each year. A mix of 2 colors provides a dazzling display. For a riot of color, plant a compatible color of pansy on top of the bulbs in the fall. The leggy look of pansies late in the spring works perfectly with some tulip blends.
